Placer gold ores can be divided into two types according to their morphology: granular gold and flake gold. The granular gold has a uniform particle size structure and can be roughly separated and enriched using gravity separation equipment/jigging or C/jigging, while flake gold can be roughly separated and enriched using a jig.
The purification method for placer gold after rough selection and enrichment is generally the mercury amalgamation method. The mercury amalgamation method for gold extraction has a long history and has accumulated very rich production experience. It is based on the difference in mercury wettability between the surface of single gold particles in the slurry and the surface of other mineral particles. The surface of gold particles is mercury-philic and hydrophobic, while the surface of other mineral particles is mercury-philic and hydrophobic. The surface of the gold particles is mercury-phobic and hydrophilic. After the surface of the gold particles is wetted by mercury, the mercury continues to diffuse into the gold particles to produce gold amalgam, so that the mercury can capture the gold particles and separate the gold particles from other minerals and gangue. The fineness of placer gold is generally higher than that of vein gold, so the mercury-containing index of placer gold is higher than that of vein gold, and a better gold recovery rate can be obtained when mercury is mixed with mine gold. Since the surface of fresh gold particles is most easily wetted by mercury, the gold recovery rate of internal amalgamation is generally higher than that of external amalgamation, and internal amalgamation can obtain better indicators.
